Mexican unit of energy firm Enel connected in recent days 229MW of wind capacity to the state-operated national electricity grid, the company announced in a press release.

The output comes from two eolic parks the Italy-based company just began operating, the 129MW Palo Alto wind farm located in the State of Jalisco and the 100MW Vientos del Altiplano facility in Zacatecas State.

After a US$ 250 million investment on the larger wind farm and about US$ 220 million on the smaller one, Enel's total installed capacity in the country is now up to 729MW.

Situated in the municipality of Ojuelos, the Palo Alto facility features 43 units of 3MW wind turbines, capable of generating more than 350 GWh per year, enough to power 200,000 households in Mexico and reduce nearly 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The Vientos del Altiplano wind farm comprises 50 wind turbines, each with 2MW of capacity and is expected to generate over 280GWh annually, equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of over 161,000 Mexican households.

The company is also set to construct the 93 MW wind project Salitrillos in the northern State of Tamaulipas.
