Mount Franklin Foods, a leading North American manufacturer of high-quality candy and nut products, acquired its first candy making facility in the United States from Au’some Candy Co. The plant is located in Sumter County, South Carolina. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The company plans to invest US$ 10 million in state-of-the-art equipment. Expanding beyond its current focus as a multi-line candy business, Mount Franklin Foods plans to add both organic and nutraceutical products that are fortified with multivitamins, probiotics and other ingredients.

The candy facility is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2017 and is projected to create at least 225 new jobs, the company said.

When the Au'some candy plant abruptly closed in March due to bankruptcy, about 60 remaining employees were suddenly let go. Many of them —and other former plant employees— were all smiles last week at Mount Franklin Foods' introductory event for them in Live Oak Industrial Park, where the company made a formal announcement that the plant would be back in business.

Mount Franklin has an interest in former Au'some employees because they have experience making candy and are aware of Food and Drug Administration rules.

The acquisition of the Sumter candy plant marks Mount Franklin’s fifth food manufacturing plant. The company owns three candy plants located in Juarez, Mexico, and an Azar Nut plant in El Paso, Texas.

Based in El Paso, Texas, Mount Franklin Foods employs more than 2,800 team members across North America, supplying major retailers, wholesalers and foodservice distributors. With four manufacturing plants and a net operating space of more than one million square feet, Mount Franklin Foods is one of the largest foodservice distributors in the United States.
