The talent of Mexico’s young robotics students and developers was tested once again on the international stage with excellent results. Jorge Zárate and Luis Enrique Salazar, both 14, traveled to New Delhi, India, recently to compete in the World Robot Olympiad where they had to design and build a robot that could identify and sort cubes of different sizes and colors, a task that in the future could be applied in the recycling industry. Zárate and Salazar, who are students at Robotix, a Mexican school that specializes in robotics technologies, won fifth place in the competition, earning as well the highest score possible in the various programmed and surprise tests.

Mexican students also did well in another international robotics event, the recent Robomatrix Latin America competition in Bogotá, Colombia. Three students from the San Luis Potosí campus of the Valley of Mexico University (UVM) earned third place with their Medical Assistance and Monitoring Robot (RAMM). Designed by Rebeca Gabriela Valdivia, José Daniel Álvarez and José Manuel Martínez, RAMM is a robot that monitors stay-at-home or elderly patients that require ambulatory care. The robot can be remotely controlled via a mobile phone app developed by the mechatronics engineering students. The app can activate pulse and temperature readings and an alarm-based pill dispenser. Communication with the patient takes place through text messages and a video conference camera. The robot can also serve as a height-adjustable walking aid.
