Nissan CEO forecasts record sales, shows confidence in Trump policies

Nissan Motor will post record sales in 2017 as stronger global economic growth buoys demand for the industry, offsetting the impact of volatile currency and commodity markets, CEO Carlos Ghosn revealed last week on a press conference.

According to its latest global sales figures, Nissan sold 4.52 million over January to October, after posting record sales of 5.42 million cars and trucks worldwide in 2015.

"I think 2017 should be a good year. I think we will see reasonable economic growth, particularly in the car industry ... I think we will establish a record for sales in 2017," Ghosn told reporters.

The CEO said he was confident that U.S. trade policy under President-elect Donald Trump would continue to promote strong ties with Mexico, where Nissan produces cars for export to the U.S.

Ghosn said that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s America-first agenda should mean trade with Mexico, where the Japanese company is the biggest auto producer, will be protected.

“I’m not very worried because what has been said by the president-elect of the U.S. is America first,’ and American interests in Mexico are huge,” Ghosn said at Nissan’s headquarter in Yokohama, Japan. “Protecting American interests in a certain way means protecting trade with Mexico.”
