Automotive Lighting LLC plans to invest US$ 35 million for a new production facility in Michigan in a project that it says will create 362 jobs over five years, state authorities announced.

The Michigan Strategic Fund approved a grant of US$ 2 million for Auburn Hills-based Automotive Lighting to convert its current exhaust component facility into an exterior lighting production facility, according to a Michigan Economic Development Corp. memo.

Automotive Lighting considered two other previously built locations for the facility, one in Mexico and one in Tennessee, which would have required lower up front capital investment and lower wages than what is planned for Michigan, according to the document.

The state memo noted the current exhaust work done at the plant "is very small, and the little work left will transfer to a facility in Mexico."

Automotive Lighting owns three production sites in Mexico. Two plants in Juarez, Chihuahua, manufacture exterior lighting products, another facility in Tepotzotlan, state of Mexico, builds lighting and electronic components.

Automotive Lighting is a subsidiary of the Italian company Magneti Marelli Group, which develops, manufactures and sells automotive exterior lighting products worldwide. Magneti Marelli is owned by Fiat Chrysler.
