Mexico’s production and export of cars reached a record high in February, rising 11.1% and 9.7% respectively year-on-year, according to figures by the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA).

AMIA data shows that in February, the country produced a total of 301,475 light vehicles and exported 240,909 of them.

In the first two months of this year combined, Mexico produced 580,017 cars and exported a total of 452,591, up 7.7% and 4.5% respectively compared to figures from the same period of 2016.

The U.S. market remained as the absolute top destination, receiving 75.6% of exported Mexican vehicles, although it saw a drop in its domestic sales, AMIA said.

“In a country (the United States) where sales are dropping, we are growing and we have taken our market share to 13.9%. This is a participation we have never had,” said Eduardo Solis, the president of AMIA, at a press conference.
