Hybrid-electric car sales skyrocketed 448.4% in Mexico during 2016

Last year, 8,260 hybrid or electric vehicles were sold in Mexico, a 448.4% increase from 1,842 units bought by Mexican consumers during 2015, according to data from the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA).

A total of 7,989 vehicles sold were hybrids, while just 271 featured full electric powertrains, says the AMIA report.

Mexico City is where almost half of sales took place with 3,846 cars or a 46.6% share, that’s 7.3 times higher than the 526 units sold in 2015. Hybrid vehicles sales in the country’s capital totaled 3,711 compared to just 135 full electric.

The Toyota Prius was the best-selling hybrid car in the country due in great part to a stimulus program for taxi drivers in Mexico City. Nissan Leaf took the lead in the electric cars segment.

Mexico City is followed far behind by the neighboring State of Mexico in hybrid/electric car sales with 1,060 units, Jalisco took the third place with 624 vehicles, followed by Nuevo Leon and Puebla with 570 and 300 units respectively.
