Mexican SMEs are soon to start supplying to six Tier 1 manufacturers that used to import components from the U.S., Europe and Asia. Alfonso Peña, from the Nuevo Leon Automotive Cluster (Claut), estimates that this initiative will prompt the substitution of imports worth US$127 million per year. But this change is incipient. According to ProMexico, the Country imports raw materials, pieces and tooling valued at US$50 billion, and this figure has been increasing over the last years. Veronica Orendain, from the Ministry of Economy, recognized that the Tier 2 and Tier 3 supply development is a pending task to help increase Mexico's competitiveness as a vehicle production platform.
