Lear Corporation officially opened its 46th production site in Mexico a month after the facility started its first phase of operations in Matamoros, Coahuila, to manufacture wire harnesses.

Just half of the 300,000 square-feet facility is occupied, but the company expects to operate the plant at full capacity by the end of this year.

Around 1,200 workers were recruited for the first phase of operations, a figure Lear expects to increase to 3,000 when the plant reaches its intended production rates.

During the last four years the company opened 12 plants in the country. The auto supplier estimates its Mexican workforce will total 56,000 employees by the end of the year.
