Vestas secures deal to supply turbines for Mexico’s largest wind farm

Vestas Wind Systems A/S revealed that the recently announced agreement to equip Zuma Energia’s 424-MW Parque Eolico Reynosa III wind farm in Mexico has now turned into a firm and unconditional supply order. The value of the contract remains undisclosed.

As part of the deal the Danish wind turbine maker will supply and install 123 units of its V136-3.45 MW machines for the wind farm in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, which will be one of the largest wind power projects in Latin America. The agreement also includes a 15-year full-scope Active Output Management (AOM 5000) service contract.

Vestas expects to start delivering the equipment late this year and commission the plant in 2018. The company noted that it will make the turbine blades in Mexico.

The Danish firm has been active on the Mexican wind market since 1994. Including the deal with Zuma Energia, its order intake from energy auctions in the North American country stands at nearly 500 MW. Overall, Vestas has installed or has under construction over 1.5 GW of wind turbines in Mexico.

The Reynosa III project was awarded to Zuma Energia as part of Mexico’s renewable energy auction in September 2016. The North American country aims to source 50% of its total energy from renewables by 2050.

The blades for V136-3.45 MW projects in Latin America will be produced in Mexico which underlines our long-term localization strategy in Mexico and Vestas’ strong commitment to support Mexico´s renewable target of 35% of clean energy by 2024”, said Angelica Ruiz Celis, Vestas’ Managing Director for Mexico and Northern Latin America.

Vestas pioneered the Mexican wind energy market back in 1994 when it installed the first commercial wind turbine in the country. With this new order, Vestas has more than 1.5 GW of wind turbines either installed or under construction in Mexico.
