VW unveils the new T-Roc compact SUV; could be built in Puebla

Volkswagen unveiled its new T-Roc compact crossover in a ceremony on the shores of Lake Como in Italy. The move seeks to realign VW product strategy to put the red-hot crossover/SUV market at the top of its priorities.

"SUVs are moving more and more people around the world and they are also moving the car industry," Dr. Herbert Diess, Volkswagen's CEO, said at the ceremony.

With the addition of the T-Roc, VW's global line up will feature as many as 19 different crossovers and SUVs that will account for 40% of its worldwide sales, Diess added.

The VW will be available with six different gasoline and diesel engines ranging from 113 to 187 horsepower.

In Europe, the T-Roc is expected to go on sale in November for around 20,000 euros with China soon to follow, but there’s no plans to introduce the model into the U.S. market until 2019.

The T-Roc will be manufactured at the FAW Volkswagen joint venture in China for the Asian market, while the European production will be allocated in Portugal.

According to Glenn Brooks from just-auto.com, the T-Roc could be built also in Puebla, since it’s based on the same MQB platform as the new Tiguan.
