Here’s how sales of Mexico-made cars ended up in August across the US market

Auto sales for Mexico-made vehicles in the U.S. market were marked in August by an upturn in the Audi Q5, which is once again Audi’s best-selling vehicle after facing inventory issues that led to a two-digit decline in July. August also marked the first full month of sales for the all-new 2018 VW Tiguan, one of the only two built-in-Mexico models to feature a third-row seat. Such vehicles are currently on high demand in the U.S.

The following report does not necessary reflects that each vehicle sold from certain model was built in Mexico. Automakers constantly mix domestic and overseas supplies from several countries to meet U.S. demand.

Audi

Audi of America reported an August sales increase of 2.8% to 19,811 deliveries, as the Q7 and the new Q5 and A5 Sportback helped drive consumer demand. August was the 80th consecutive record sales month for Audi of America. The previous August record was set last year with 19,264 deliveries. Through August, Audi has now sold 141,606 vehicles in the U.S. this year, which means an increase of 5.2%. Deliveries of the new Puebla-made Q5 rose to 4,767 units in August, up 7.9% compared to same month of 2016. From January through August sales of the Q5 SUV, including the SQ5 (sport version) totaled 34,630 vehicles and have now risen 10.9% for the year.

FCA

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US LLC reported total August sales of 176,033 units, down 11%, while retail sales of 140,379 units (80% of total) represented a 7% decrease. Through August FCA has sold 1,404,872 vehicles in 2017, down 8% compared to the first eight months of 2016. The Toluca-made Jeep Compass totaled 9,305 units during the sixth month since its arrival to exhibit rooms. The Dodge Journey sales sank 52% to 5,665 units, but year-to-date sales are still up 5% to 69,342 crossovers. Ram pickup sales fell 7% to 37,608 units, but increased 5% to 327,759 trucks during the first eight months of 2017. Sales of the Fiat 500 fell 25% to 937 units, while year-to-date sales totaled 9,419 units, down 7%. Sales of the ProMaster Van hiked 45% to 4,589 units and totaled 28,332 vehicles on a year-to-date basis, which means a 21% jump.

Ford

Ford Motor Company’s U.S. sales were down 2.1% in August to 209,897 vehicles. From January through August Ford has sold 1,711,211 vehicles, a 4.1% decrease compared to the same eight-month period of 2016. Retail results totaled 164,067 vehicles, down 2.7% compared to last year. Sales of Ford Fiesta fell 14.1% in August to 4,247 units and dropped 6.3% during the first eight months of 2017 to 32,409 vehicles. The Ford Fusion sales fell 8.8% to 17,378 units, and totaled 138,489 vehicles from January through August, down 27.1%. The Lincoln MKZ sales totaled 2,160 units last month and 18,901 from January through August, down 21.6% and 7.4% respectively.

GM reported U.S. retail sales of 221,778 vehicles, up 4.2% compared to August 2016. Year-to-date retail sales are down 1.8% to 1,557,043 units. Last May, production for the all-new Chevrolet Equinox started in two Mexican facilities, GM delivered 28,245 of those units in the U.S. market during August. Chevrolet Cruze sales totaled 16,500 units, including sedan and hatchback versions, down 26.1%. Silverado sales increased 3.9% to 54,448 units while GMC Sierra’s decreased 1.3% to 17,254 units. GM builds in Mexico crew cab versions of both trucks. The Chevrolet Trax sales hiked 16.8% to 8,171 crossovers. Last month the all-new Mexico-made GMC Terrain arrived to auto dealers, 9,218 units were sold in the U.S. market including new and previous versions.

Honda

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. reported total August sales of 146,015 Honda and Acura vehicles, a slight decrease of 2.4% versus same month of 2016. Total sales from January through August decreased 0.5% to 1,088,881 units. The compact hatchback Honda Fit saw a 9.7% drop in August, totaling 4,850 units. From January through August the Fit totaled sales of 35,976 units, down 5.8%. On the other hand, sales of the HR-V crossover skyrocketed 22% to 9,603 units. Year-to-date sales for the HR-V totaled 66,010 units, up 28.4% compared to the first eight months of 2016.

Kia/Hyundai

Kia Motors America (KMA) announced August sales of 53,323 vehicles, 1.7% less compared to same month of 2016. Its sister brand Hyundai reported August sales of 54,310 units, a 24.5% decline. The Forte family reported its best-ever August sales of 10,693 units, up 28.7%. Year-to-date sales totaled 81,461 vehicles, up 14.1%. Sales of Kia Rio plunged 50.5% to 1,643 units. Year-to-date sales totaled 9,915 units, down 55%. Kia has officially started production of the Hyundai Accent in Nuevo Leon. Its sales totaled 2,632 units in August, down 68.4% compared to same month of 2016.

Mazda

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) reported August U.S. sales of 25,846 vehicles, a decrease of 1% versus August of last year. Year-to-date (YTD) sales through August are down 2.4% versus last year, with 194,559 vehicles sold. Sales of the Mazda3 totaled 6,754 units in August, down 7.4%, while year-to-date sales totaled 43,995 vehicles, 19.1% less compared to the same eight-month period of 2016. The company combines sedan and hatchback sales for the Mazda3, but only the saloon version is built in Salamanca, Guanajuato.

Nissan

Nissan Group announced total U.S. sales for August 2017 of 108,326 units, a decrease of 13.1% over the prior year. The Nissan Division reported 97,340 units sold, down 14.8% from previous year, while the Infiniti brand sold 10,986 units, up 5.2%. Nissan sold 6,759 units of its Versa compact car, including sedan and the hatchback version known as Versa Note, a 36.1 % drop. Year-to-date sales for the Versa totaled 71,216 units, down 25%. As for the Nissan Sentra 15,285 units were sold in August, 7.2% more than the prior year. Year-to-date sales totaled 146,583 vehicles, down 5.9% compared to the firsts eight months of 2016.

Toyota

Toyota Motor North America reported August sales of 227,625 units including those of its Lexus brand, up 6.8% compared to same month of 2016. The Toyota division posted sales of 196,824 units, an increase of 8%, while Lexus posted sales of 30,801 units, a decrease of 0.4%. The midsize pickup Tacoma, which is built both in San Antonio, Texas and Tijuana, Mexico, saw sales rise 13.1% to 17,394 units in August. For the year, Tacoma sales are now up 1.9% to 129,362 units. The Yaris iA, built by Mazda in Guanajuato, totaled 3,391 units sold in August, up 34.8%. Year-to-date sales are 16.1% up to 25,472 units.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen of America reported sales of 32,015 units delivered in August 2017, a 9% decrease over same month of 2016. With 220,344 units delivered year-to-date in 2017, the company is reporting an increase of 6.4% in year-over-year sales. The whole Golf family saw monthly sales of 5,961 vehicles, an increase of 23.2%. Year-to-date sales totaled 49,791 vehicles, up 36.4%. The Jetta saw a 5.9% decrease to 12,409 vehicles, and a 3.1% drop to 78,958 units in the first eight months of 2017. VW sold 1,224 Beetle cars in August, down 19.4%. Year-to-date sales totaled 11,404 units, up 16.1%. August 2017 marked the first full month of sales for the all-new 2018 Tiguan, which totaled 2,516 units. Meanwhile VW sold 1,005 units of the previous version, which now will be offered as the Tiguan Limited.
