Last month, sales of cars and light trucks in the Mexican market fell 11.5% to 116,356 units, affected in great part by earthquakes of September 7 and 19, according to data the Mexican Auto Industry Association (AMIA) released today.

From January through September Mexican auto dealers sold 1,106,848 light vehicles, a 1.1% decrease compared to the first nine months of 2016, the AMIA revealed.

Guillermo Rosales, Deputy Director General of the Mexican Association of Auto Dealers (AMDA), said that the impact of the earthquakes had a huge impact on the sale of cars, because people gave priority to more urgent needs such as housing.

Most brands reported sales losses, starting with Nissan, which is the leader in sales with a 24.3% market share. The Japanese automaker reported a 13.1% drop to 28,159 units, compared to 32,396 vehicles sold in September 2016.

General Motors, with a 16.4% market share, reported a 24.5% decline to 18,077 vehicles from 23,939 during same month of last year.

Volkswagen Group, the third best-selling automotive group in the country with a 15.6% market share, recorded sales of 17,292 units of its Audi, Porsche, Seat and Volkswagen brands, down 15.2% compared to the same period last year.

Kia and its sister brand Hyundai were some of the few automakers to post gains with 27.1% and 24.1% increases respectively.
