Italy-based Enel enters the Mexican power supply market

Italian utility company Enel launched its subsidiary Suministro Calificado (Qualified Supply) in Mexico which aims to get at least 150 large customers a demand of 400 gigawatts-hour (GWh) per year and sales for US$ 35 million.

For the next five years, they will seek to reach a thousand customers, which represent 25% of the eligible today with consumptions exceeding 1 MW constant, either by themselves or by aggregated demand from groups of customers that represent the same economic interests.

"The contracts we will be looking for will be like tailor-made suits for our clients' needs, without tariff or temporary generalizations, which will allow us to compete," said Gerardo Cervantes, commercial and energy manager at Enel Mexico and Central America during a press conference in Mexico City.

A qualified supplier is the representative of the users in the wholesale electricity market. The services of Enel Energia Mexico will comprise complete management of the power consumption. For that end, the Italian will buy in the wholesale market the best offers, which will complement with its 728 MW of installed capacity and the 1,282 MW that it builds in the country, since it was the biggest winner of the two long-term auctions that have taken place under the energy reform.

Among other projects, the company currently builds a US$ 650 million photovoltaic plant in Coahuila, which is scheduled to become operational in 2018.

Since 2008, the Italian firm has invested US$ 1.5 billion in Mexico and plans to invest another US$ 1.4 billion in the next two years, totaling US$ 2.9 billion in 2019.
