Asahi Kasei Corp., a Japan-based manufacturer of high performance plastic compounds, confirmed plans to open a production facility in Mexico, most likely in the state of Queretaro, a company official confirmed to Plastic News website.

“We already have enough sales in Mexico to justify having a plant here," said sales director Scott Kushion to Plastic News. Construction is expected to begin in 2019, with production starting in 2020, he added.

The executive said the plant will be similar to a facility the company opened in Alabama last year, which employs about 50 workers and covers 100,000 square feet. The company generates about 90% of its total sales in Mexico from the auto sector, including original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and auto suppliers.

Though no investment figures were provided, MexicoNow previously reported Asahi Kasei planned to invest up to US$ 20 million to set up manufacturing operations in the country.
