Two out of every three imported beers consumed in the United States last year was provided by Mexico, which remains the absolute leader of this niche, although that market represents only 13% of total beer consumption in the neighboring country.

This preference for Mexican beer led to an increase of 4.4% in exports to the United States in 2017 compared to 2016, totaling 712,020,884 gallons. This figure represents 66.7% of the 1,067,283,189 gallons of beer imported into the U.S. during the past year, according to a report from the US Beer Institute (PDF) with data from the Department of Commerce.

Of the Mexican exports, 67.1% was shipped in bottles, or a total of 478,097,311 gallons, while 28.9% was exported in cans (205,714,313 gallons) and only 4% (28,209,260 gallons) arrived to the U.S. in draft.

The Netherlands ranked second, with 144,931,180 gallons to a market share of 13.57%. Belgium, Canada and Germany followed with market shares of 5.4%, 4.15% and 3.15% respectively.

The most popular Mexican brands include Corona Extra and Modelo Especial, both manufactured for the US market by Constellation Brands as well as Dos Equis and Tecate, produced by the subsidiary Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma de Heineken.
