Nissan Cuernavaca plant shuts down third shift; lays off 550 workers

Representatives of the workers union of the Nissan plant in Cuernavaca, Morelos (CIVAC) announced that due to an increase in inventories, the Japanese automaker decided to eliminate the third production shift, which implied layoff for 550 workers, reported El Universal.

Through a memorandum, the union leaders asked the workers to remain calm and assured that they are negotiating with the company to try to reduce the number of dismissals as much as possible.

A few months ago, Nissan announced that the plant would stop producing the Tiida compact sedan, which has contributed to a gradual reduction in operations. Back then, the company said that production volumes at the facility will not be affected, since it will continue to manufacture the NP300 Frontier and NP300 pickups, the Nissan Versa, as well as the NV200 and NV200 Taxi commercial vans.
