Asian brands account for more than half of Mexico’s auto sales in the first quarter

During the first quarter of 2018, auto sales of Asian brands in Mexico accounted for the first time for more than half of total, grabbing a 54.6% of market share, according to figures of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA).

Auto sales in Mexico totaled 337,229 vehicles in the first three months of the year, a 10.8% decline compared to those sold over the same period in 2017. Also in the first quarter, 110,546 vehicles were imported from Asia, equivalent to 63% of total imports, a year ago the figure were of 50.8%.

At the end of March, market share of Japanese and Korean automakers in Mexico was as follows: Nissan 23.8%, Toyota 7.6%, KIA 6.9%, Honda 6.8%, Mazda 3.9%, Hyundai 3.5%, Suzuki 1.6% and Infiniti 0.2%, while Acura, Isuzu and Subaru each obtained 0.1%.

It’s worth noting that Nissan, Toyota, Honda, KIA, Mazda and Hyundai they all have assembly plants in the country, from where they also supply part of the domestic demand.
