Volkswagen and its sibling Audi posted mixed results in the first quarter of 2018 concerning production and exports, with the first one facing challenges to adjust inventories and to launch the all-new Jetta, while the latter benefits from high demand of SUVs in the North American market.

Volkswagen exports from Mexico dropped 20% during the first quarter totaling 68,224 units, 17,076 less vehicles than those shipped overseas during the first three months of 2017 according to figures of the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA).

The German automaker also saw its production fall 33.5% to 78,219 units during the first quarter. At the assembly plant located in the municipality of Cuautlancingo, Puebla, Volkswagen’s largest outside Germany, the company built in the first three months of the year 13,500 all-new Jettas, 11,542 Golfs, 8,215 Beetles and 44,962 Tiguans.

Things went different at an assembly plant in the municipality of San Jose Chiapa, also in the state of Puebla, where Volkswagen’s premium sister company Audi builds Q5 SUVs. During the first quarter Audi built 45,897 Q5 in there, of which 44,529 units were exported. Such figures represent increases of 97.2% and 101.2% respectively, compared to same period of 2017.
