Production idles at two Nissan plants in Aguascalientes

A local auto workers union confirmed that a new production stoppage will take place this week at the two auto plants Nissan Motor Corp. operates in Aguascalientes state in order to adjust inventories in both Mexico and the U.S. market. It is the second time that production idles at both A1 and A2 Nissan plants so far this year.

A second stoppage will occur in July to make some necessary updates on production lines for the manufacture of the 2019 year models, according to local media in central Mexico.

Nissan builds four models at the Aguascalientes plants, but only the Sentra and the Versa are made for the U.S. market. The Versa saw its sales drop 18.4% in the U.S. market during the first quarter to 25,365 vehicles, including hatchback and sedan versions. Meanwhile, sales of the Sentra hiked 16.7% in the same period to 60,002 vehicles.

The Japanese automaker also builds in Aguascalientes the Nissan Kicks SUV, which is expected to enter the U.S. market in the second half of 2018, and the Nissan March, a subcompact car that is sold in Canada as the Nissan Micra.

Nissan also operates in Aguascalientes a joint venture with Daimler where it recently started production of the Infiniti QX50, but that facility is not expected to idle since the redesigned model has just started arriving showrooms across the U.S.
