Enel’s Mexican renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power Mexico announced it has signed an agreement with the country’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for the 10% expansion of its Villanueva and Don Jose solar parks and Salitrillos wind farm.

The expansions of the three plants will require an overall investment of around US$ 97 million and will add around 107 MW to Enel’s renewable capacity in Mexico once completed

Enel Green Power Mexico (EGPM) signed an agreement with Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (“Comisión Federal de Electricidad” in Spanish or “CFE”) to expand by 10% the capacity of the 754 MW Villanueva and the 238 MW Don José photovoltaic solar parks, as well as of the 93 MW Salitrillos wind farm, which are all currently under construction. These expansions will add approximately 107 MW to the Enel Group’s renewable capacity in Mexico once completed.

“The expansion of three of Enel Green Power Mexico’s plants confirms our leadership in the country’s renewable energy sector, as we are the first and so far, the only company that has signed this type of agreement,” said in a statement Paolo Romanacci, Country Manager of Enel Green Power Central America and Mexico.

It is worth noting that the Villanueva photovoltaic plant, located in the state of Coahuila, is currently the largest in the country. The facility covers 3,000 hectares, 2,400 of which are occupied with 2.35 million panels. Once expanded will have a final installed capacity of approximatley 828 MW, adding around 74 MW to the initial capacity of 754 MW, enough power to supply 1.3 million Mexican households.

The expansions are the result of an existing option in the energy sales contracts linked to the three plants and awarded to EGPM in Mexico’s first two long-term energy auctions (the contracts for Villanueva and Don Jose were awarded in the first auction, the contract for Salitrillos in the second auction, both carried out in 2016). All three projects involved are backed by contracts for the sale of specific volumes of energy for 15 years and Clean Energy Certificates for 20 years to CFE.

The expansions of Villanueva and Don Jose will enter into operation in the second half of 2018, while that of Salitrillos in the first half of 2019.

The Don Jose solar plant, which is located in the state of Guanajuato, will add around 22 MW to its original capacity of 238 MW, reaching a final installed capacity of approximately 260 MW.

The Salitrillos wind farm, located in the state of Tamaulipas, will be expanded by about 10 MW, reaching a final installed capacity of around 103 MW from 93 MW. Once completed, the overall additional capacity of approx. 107 MW will produce around 265 GWh per year.
