NAFTA deal unlikely to meet US Congress deadline, says Mexican top negotiator

Two days ahead of the deadline established by the US Congress to receive the revised North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and submit it to ratification, the Government of Mexico acknowledged that there is no margin to conclude the talks.

In an interview with Televisa, Mexico's Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal admitted that talks between Mexican, Canadian and US negotiators are still far from closure.

"We do not believe that we have all the negotiations, it is not easy, we do not believe that it will be here until Thursday," the official said.

US House of Representatives President Paul Ryan recently said that if a notice of a trade agreement is not sent to lawmakers in his country by May 17, Congress probably won’t have enough time to pass a bill on NAFTA update before the legislative elections in November.
