BMW has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Germany-based BayWa for the development and supply of a photovoltaic (PV) farm to supply 252 MWh of power per year to the new manufacturing facility that the automaker currently builds in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

The deal was closed for a total of US$ 165 million. The energy will be generated by a solar plant that will be constructed, operated and maintained by BayWa inside the BMW premises.

This project will cut BMW’s CO2 emissions by approximately 208 tons annually, in line with BMW’s worldwide sustainability principles to continue reducing its carbon footprint worldwide.

Mexican law firm Von Wobeser y Sierra advised BMW in relation to the purchase agreement, one of the firsts executed under the isolated supply scheme in full compliance with the new legal framework of the energy sector in Mexico and specifically with the administrative guidelines recently issued by the National Energy Commission on November 21th, 2017. The solar PV farm will start operations in the first quarter of 2019.
