Cerveceria Yucateca, Grupo Modelo’s newest brewery might double its production capacity in the coming years in demand keeps its pace, company officials revealed to Mexican media in recent days.

In interview to El Financiero paper, regional manager Eduardo Loges, who’s in charge of the facility located in Merida, Yucatan state capital, said the brewery currently operates at a yearly output rate of 5 million hectoliters, but it will increase to 7 million in the coming months.

"Mexico became a world reference in beer. We can still increase capacity to 15 million (of hectoliters), that's how the plant was designed, but it depends on domestic and global demand," he explained.

On the occasion of the brewery’s first anniversary of operations, Loges highlighted that they have produced 2.6 million hectoliters, equivalent to about 750 million bottles. Of that amount, 25% is shipped overseas.

The facility supplies beer for markets like England, Canada, Italy, France, South Africa, Colombia, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Belize, China, Australia, Spain and Iraq.

Cerveceria Yucateca is located 17 kilometers from Merida and has created more than 500 permanent jobs.

Founded in 1925, Grupo Modelo is the largest producer and distributor of beer in Mexico. In 2012 the company was acquired by Belgian-Brazilian transnational beverage giant Anheuser-Busch InBev, the World's largest brewer.

On January 31, 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice filed an anti-trust suit in an attempt to prevent the buyout. The matter was settled and the two companies merged in June 2013, with the transfer of all United States rights to Constellation Brands.
