Boosted by automation, Tesla is on track to build 5,000 Model 3 cars per week

Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed last week that production of Model 3 has steadily improved at the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California, and that the company is on track to meet its goal of 5,000 cars a week by the end of June, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The plant is immersed in an intense process of automation to make more efficient the production of the most accessible vehicle in its catalog.

According to the article, the Model 3 body line is now 95 percent automated, including the transfer, loading, and welding of parts. Tesla has also managed to bring automation even to the process of placing the seats, something unusual in the automotive industry.

The quality control process is also heavily automated with 47 robots scanning the Model 3 bodies body line at 1,900 different points to match them to design specifications with a precision of 0.15 millimeters.

Furthermore, “Torque measurements are also automatically recorded for every bolt that’s fastened. During the final test drives on the track, sound recorders measure squeaks, rattles and wind and road noise that a test driver might miss. All of this data is stored with each car’s unique Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, so service centers can trace any issue back to a root cause in the factory,” says the report.

Well, according to the Monroney sticker, which is a label placed on the window of every car to provide certain official information about the vehicle, 25 percent of the 10,000 unique parts in a Tesla Model 3 are manufactured in Mexico.
