Mexico’s auto production up 3.9% in May; exports? Yeah, about that…

Mexico's auto production grew 3.9% last May to 352,860 units, a record for the month, according to the latest data from the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA). Meanwhile, production of automakers installed in the country totaled 1,607,057 vehicles in the first five months of the year, to a slight increase of 0.6% compared to same period of previous year.

As for production in May, the carmaker that produced the most vehicles was General Motors with 76,094 units, which represented a 20% growth compared to the same month of the previous year.

Nissan followed in volume with 61,140 vehicles, but that figure represented for the Japanese automaker a decrease of 24.5%.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Mexico reported the production of 50,728 vehicles, or a growth of 0.9%; Volkswagen added 44,311 units, 5.9% more; and Kia totaled 24,458 vehicles, a 19.5% hike.

Ford Motor reported 23,855 units produced; Honda added 20,070 vehicles, up 8.8%. Toyota posted production of 18,170 units, a 41.9% boost due to a recent expansion of its assembly plant in Tijuana; and Audi reported production of 18,128 units.

The president of the organization, Eduardo Solis Sanchez, said at a press conference that, due to causes beyond his competence, three carmakers operating in the country, Nissan, Volkswagen and Honda, stopped providing their export figures.

The official explained that when comparing the figures from year to year, excluding the aforementioned companies, it results that the export of vehicles during last May registered a growth of 9.9%, while from January to May the cumulative figure increased 11.1%, with respect to the same period of the previous year.

AMIA clarified that, despite the lack of concrete data, its estimates for 2018 are maintained in more than four million vehicles produced and about 3.2 million units exported.

Because several assemblers have been reluctant to provide their export data to the AMIA, negotiations have begun for companies to provide this information to government agencies, such as the Bank of Mexico (Central bank), the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), and the Ministry of Economy, hence those would become the ones in charge of preparing the statistics.
