Production of Volkswagen plant in Puebla up 5.9% during May

Last May, production of Volkswagen at its Puebla assembly plant totaled 44,311 vehicles, which represents a 5.9% increase compared to the 41,825 units from the same month of 2017, according to official data from the German automaker.

From January through May, 155,835 vehicles were produced on the facility located at the municipality of Cuautlancingo, Puebla, the figure represents a 21.4% drop compared to the 198,309 units from the same period of 2017.

The shortage of 42,474 cars in five months led Volkswagen to position itself as the fourth manufacturer with the highest automotive production, after General Motors, Nissan and Chrysler all of which that exceeded 255,000 units.

Exports from the facility, which is the company’s largest plant outside Germany, totaled 131,504 vehicles, which represents 84% of its total production and a 15.4% drop compared to same period of 2017.

The Puebla facility builds nearly every variant of the Golf, except for the electric unit eGolf and the sporty version known as the R-Line, which are built in Germany. It also produces the all-new Tiguan, the all-new Jetta and the Beetle.

Meanwhile, its premium brand Audi built 80,682 Q5 SUVs during the first five months of the year at its production facility located in San Jose Chiapa, Puebla. That figure represented a skyrocketing 71.3% hike.

Audi exports totaled 74,091 vehicles, up 65.4% versus the same five-month period of 2017.
