Two companies from Canada and the United States are exploring the possibility of manufacturing commercial electric vehicles in Mexico, said an official from the Mexican Transport Institute (IMT), a branch of the Secretariat of Communications and Transport, which is the federal body in charge of, among other things, regulations for the transport of people and goods in Mexico.

According to Miguel Martínez Madrid, IMT's coordinator of Vehicular Engineering, the companies of which he has no authorization to reveal the name, are interested in manufacturing electric vehicles for passenger and cargo transport that would use a solar energy infrastructure for recharge.

The official revealed that the representatives of both companies base their interest on three main factors: the country's potential for solar energy, given its geographical location; the feasibility of expanding the internal market for this type of transport; and finally, the possibility of exporting these vehicles to other markets using Mexico's trade agreements.

Martinez said he is optimistic that at least one of the companies will decide to undertake the project and announce its investment plans in the coming months.

"Both companies intend to produce in Mexico for the domestic market, as well as for export, and have already begun visits to local governments to explore the passenger transport market," he told the state-owned news agency Notimex.
