Here’s how US sales of Mexico-made vehicles ended up in June

June was a month of mixed results for vehicles manufactured in Mexico in the US market. On one hand, Audi Q5 picked up the growth path after recording flat results during May. On the other, most sedan and compact cars built in Mexico are facing sales decreases on a two-digit pace in many cases.

It was also a good month for the Ford Fiesta, which thanks to recent sales growth remains with a favorable balance during the first semester in a market dominated by pickups and SUVs.

June is also marked as the month in which the Nissan Kicks entered the U.S. market, although the units are just beginning to reach dealers.

The following report does not necessary reflects that each vehicle sold from certain model was built in Mexico, as marked in those particular cases. Automakers constantly mix domestic and overseas supplies from several countries to meet U.S. demand.

Audi

Audi of America reported June sales of 19,471 vehicles, a marginal increase of 0.3% compared to total sales of same month in 2017. Audi’s year-to-date sales through June totaled 107,942 units, an increase of 4.8% compared to the first half of 2017. After a month of flat sales, the Q5 SUV, Audi’s best-selling model in the United States, saw its sales increase 5% in June to 4,728 units, which means that one in four vehicles sold by the German automaker in June was a made in Puebla Q5. In the first half of 2018, sales of the Q5 totaled 28,951 vehicles, an increase of 12% compared to the same six-month period of 2017.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US (FCA) reported sales of 202,264 vehicles in June 2018, an 8% increase compared to same month of 2017. Year-to-date sales are now of 1,115,476 units, up 5%. FCA sold 15,142 Jeep Compass last month, an increase of 82% compared to the 8,311 units sold in June 2017. Year-to-date sales are now of 87,510 vehicles, which represents an increase of 240% compared to sales from the first half of 2017.

Sales of the Fiat 500 were of just 354 units in June and 2,262 vehicles on a year-to-date basis, representing drops of 64% and 70% respectively. Sales of the Dodge Journey hiked 86% in June to 11,286 units, but its year-to-date results are still down 8% to 52,309 vehicles. All three vehicles are built at FCA’s plant in Toluca.

Ford

Overall Ford Motor Company U.S. sales for June totaled 230,635 vehicles, a gain of 1.2% compared to same month of 2017. In the first half of 2018 sales were of 1,277,691 units, down 1.8%. The Ford Fiesta saw its sales hike 19.2% to 4,800 units in June, while its year-to-date sales totaled 25,359 vehicles, a 3.2% increase compared to same six-month period of 2017.

Sales of the Ford Fusion sank 13.6% to 15,678 vehicles, while its year-to-date sales were of 86,978 units, down 18.9%. The Lincoln MKZ saw a 18.6% drop in sales of 1,824 units in June and a decline of 32.5% to 9,675 vehicles in a year-to-date basis. Both the Fusion and the MKZ are built in Hermosillo, Sonora, while the Ford Fiesta for the U.S. market is sourced from Cuautitlan, state of Mexico.

General Motors

General Motors announced in March that it would cease monthly sales reports in favor of quarterly reports. For the second quarter the Detroit-based automaker sold 758,376 vehicles, a 4.6% increase compared to same period of 2017. Total sales in the first half of 2018 were of 1,474,170 units, also a gain of 4.2%. Sales of the third-gen Equinox were of 73,967 units in the second quarter and 156,365 vehicles in the first semester. The SUV, built in assembly plants in Canada and Mexico, entered the U.S. market last Summer.

Sales of the Chevy Trax hiked 42.7% to 26,507 units in the second quarter, while its first semester sales totaled 46,989 vehicles, up 27.2%. The Chevy Trax for the U.S. market is sourced from South Korea and San Luis Potosi. Sales of Chevrolet Silverado increased 15.7% to 155,529 units in the first quarter and 10.7% to 291,074 units in the first half of year. Its twin the GMC Sierra saw its sales increase 20.4% to 59,406 units in the first quarter and 1.7% to 100,874 pickups in the first half. Crew-cab versions of both pickups are built in Silao, Guanajuato.

Sales of the revamped GMC Terrain totaled 22,327 units in the second quarter and 55,291 in the first half of 2018. Built in San Luis Potosi, the all-new SUV arrived to U.S. dealerships in August 2017. 

Honda

Honda Motor Co. reported U.S. June sales of 146,563 Honda and Acura vehicles, a 4.8% increase versus June 2017. Year-to-date sales are down 0.5% to 787,824 units. Sales of the Honda Fit totaled 4,810 units in June, up 4.2%. Its total sales for the first half of 2018 are down 4.8% to 25,064 vehicles.

The HR-V saw a 2.4% decrease in sales of 8,657 units. Its year-to-date sales totaled 45,555 vehicles, which represents an 2.3% drop. The Honda Fit is built in Celaya, Guanajuato, while the HR-V is manufactured in Celaya but also in El Salto, Jalisco.

Kia/Hyundai

Kia Motors America announced June sales of 56,571 vehicles, a 0.8% increase over the same month last year. Sales in the first half of 2018 totaled 293,563 units, which represents a 0.7% decrease. Its sister brand Hyundai reported June sales of 64,052 units, an 18% hike. Its year-to-date deliveries of 335,048 vehicles represent a 3.2% decline.

Sales of the Kia Rio totaled 1,901 units, meaning a 97.4% hike. Year-to-date sales totaled 11,071 units, up 65.6%. The Kia Forte, the brand’s second best-selling vehicle in June, totaled 10,209 units delivered, down 10.3% compared to last year. Its year-to-date sales totaled 54,400 vehicles, representing a drop of 7.4%. Sales of the Hyundai Accent totaled 2,120 units in June, while the year-to-date figure was of 14,825 vehicles. Since last August, the Accent is built in Pesqueria, Nuevo Leon along with the Rio and the Forte.

Mazda

Mazda North American Operations reported June U.S. sales of 26,893 vehicles, representing an increase of 20.4% versus June of last year. Year-to-date sales through June are up 14.2% versus last year, with 163,924 vehicles sold. Sales of the Mazda3 in sedan and hatchback versions totaled 5,433 units, representing a drop of 16.1%. Year-to-date deliveries reached 35,796 vehicles, which represents an 10.1% decline. Both versions of the Mazda3 for the U.S. market are sourced from Salamanca, Guanajuato.

Nissan

Nissan Group announced total U.S. sales for June of 145,096 units, a 1.2% increase compared to the previous year. Sales in the first half of 2018 totaled 780,695 vehicles, down 4.8%. Sales of the Nissan Versa, including both sedan and hatchback versions, dropped 5% to 7,745 units in June. Year-to-date sales decreased 19.2% to 45,684 vehicles.

The Nissan Sentra saw its sales drop 8.7% to 20,572 units in June, while its year-to-date deliveries are still 2.8% higher than last year to 115,676 vehicles. June marked the arrival of the Nissan Kicks to U.S. dealerships; 563 units were sold during the month.

With its third full month of sales at Infiniti dealerships, the all-new 2019 QX50 totaled 1,710 deliveries in June for a total 4,982 vehicles sold in the year so far. All Nissan models cited in this report are built at different plants in Aguascalientes, central Mexico.

Toyota

Toyota reported U.S. sales of 209,602 vehicles in June, a 3.6% increase compared to June 2017. Its year-to-date sales are up 3% to 1,189,312 units. Sales of the Yaris iA, which is built by Mazda at its Guanajuato plant, decreased 22.6% to 2,315 vehicles. Year-to-date sales are down 16% to 15,745 units. Sales of the Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup, built in Tijuana and San Antonio, Texas, hiked 35.6% to 22,296 units in June, and 22.9% in a year-to-date basis to 116,266 vehicles.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen reported sales of 28,941 units delivered in June, an increase of 5.7% over same month of 2017. With 172,898 units delivered in the first half of 2018, the German automaker is reporting an 7.2% increase in year-over-year sales. Sales of the Golf family declined 39.6% to 3,552 units, and 36.6% in a year-to-date basis to 24,257 vehicles. All variants of the Golf family are built in Puebla, except for the e-Golf and the R-Line, which are made in Germany.

Sales of the Jetta totaled 7,239 units, while year-to-date deliveries were of 33,023 vehicles, down 27.6% and 40.5% respectively. Sales of the Beetle totaled 1,128 units, down 28.9%. Year-to-date sales totaled 7,967 vehicles, which represented a decline of 9.7%. Sales of the all-new 2018 Tiguan, which entered the U.S. market last August, totaled 7,788 units and is once again the brand’s best-selling model. Year-to-date sales are now of 46,102 vehicles.
