Japanese gasket and seal manufacturer to build US$ 50 million plant in Yucatan

Uchiyama Group, a Japan-based manufacturer of gasket and seal products for the auto industry, announced in recent days that it has chosen the state of Yucatan, in the Mexican southeast, to establish its first manufacturing plant in the country.

According to state authorities, the company estimates an investment of US$ 50 million over a period of five years to develop its project in order to produce seals and gaskets for dynamic and static engines.

Uchiyama will open 200 jobs in order to start operations, but its workforce will continue to grow to up to 1,000 employees when the plant becomes fully operational.

The facilities will be built on a 15-hectare green field in the Hunucmá industrial corridor, where Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Yucateca Brewery (Cervecería Yucateca) already operates, among other companies.

The Japanese manufacturer, founded in 1898, is a supplier for Toyota, General Motors, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Subaru, Suzuki, Honda, Hino, Yamaha and Caterpillar, among others.

Uchiyama has a production plant in North Carolina and has operated a sales office in Leon, Guanajuato, but recently decided to take the first steps to supply the domestic market with local production.

In the last four years, its global sales have increased 38%, going from US$ 646.7 million in 2013 to US$ 892.6 million in 2017.
