Ford’s Mexico-made electric vehicle will be a ‘Mustang-inspired’ crossover

Ford executives revealed to AutoNews more details about the electric vehicle under development to produce at the assembly plant of Cuautitlan, state of Mexico. According to the officials, it will be a “Mustang-inspired,” long-range battery-electric crossover based on a unibody platform.
“The crossover, which comes out in 2020, was tentatively named the Mach 1 this year, but the name is likely to change,” says the report. It will be Ford's answer to Tesla and the Chevrolet Bolt, AutoNews added.
Earlier this year Ford already hinted the concept in a teaser video in which a Mustang and an Explorer enter a garage to merge and create the crossover. Although the final product is not shown, the short implies that it is an electric vehicle.
According to AutoNews, “it likely will borrow heavily from the pony car's front-end design and combine the performance of an EV with the utility of an Explorer-like crossover”.
The Mustang-inspired electric crossover was originally planned for Flat Rock, Michigan, but Ford this year decided on Cuautitlan, Mexico instead. The unit is scheduled to hit the U.S. market by 2020.
As for the nameplate Mach 1, a name Ford used for a Mustang performance option at various times from 1968 through the 2004 model year, Ford officials said is temporary. “We put that out there to evaluate it,” commented Jim Farley, Ford's president of global markets. “There are pros and cons. I don't want to handicap it at this point, but we got a very strong reaction from people.”
