Spain-based Abengoa fires up 220 MW cogeneration plant in Tabasco

Abengoa, a Spain-based company with operations in the energy, telecom and transportation sectors, announced it has successfully completed the ignition of the gas turbine, known as first fire, of a A3T efficient cogeneration plant the company is building in the state of Tabasco, Southeast Mexico.

“It is an important milestone to achieve the commercial operation, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2018, as it is the first time the plant receives gas and generates electricity,” said the company in a statement. Construction works have already been completed and the plant is currently in the testing period.

Next milestone will be to complete the start-up of the steam turbine and, consequently, to achieve the synchronization of both the gas and steam turbines to reach maximum performance.

The A3T efficient cogeneration plant is located in the Municipality of Centro, home to Villahermosa city, the state capital. It has a guaranteed capacity of 220 MW and is being developed under a self-sufficiency scheme.

Abengoa revealed that 75% of the energy generated by this plant is already committed through power purchase agreements (PPA) for the next 15 years.
