The Volkswagen assembly plant in Puebla idled again this week due to the lack of supply of some components coming from Brazil, although this time not only the production of the new Jetta was affected but also that of the Golf in all its variants.

Local media attributed the stoppage to a supposed low demand of vehicles, however, sources consulted by MexicoNow said that the cause is once again the lack of certain parts for the engines that are manufactured in Guanajuato.

The source, who asked not to be identified, said that the Volkswagen plants in Brazil are carrying out a series of strikes that are somehow related to the electoral process currently under development in that country.

A couple months ago, a strike of teamsters in Brazil affected the supply of engines for the Volkswagen plant in Puebla, whose production of the all-new Jetta idled for three days.

At the Puebla plant, more than 2,500 workers are being affected by this stoppage. It is estimated that about 1,800 technicians are engaged in the production of the Jetta, which is 900 units per day in three shifts, while in the only current shift for the manufacture of the Golf there are 750 workers with a daily production of 300 cars.

It is estimated that the production of the Golf will halt for three days, while that of the Jetta could last all week.

Together, both models add an output close to 1,200 vehicles per day, whose volume represents up to 75% of the 1,600 daily units on average that were manufactured last July, according to figures from the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA).
