Last June, auto dealers in Mexico sold 1,591 new electrified vehicles, twice as much as the 791 units sold during the sixth month of 2017. In the first half of 2018 sales of electrified units totaled 8,082 vehicles, which represents a 60.4% hike compared to the same six-month period of last year.

June figure comprised of 19 full-electric cars, 169 plug-in hybrids and 1,403 hybrid vehicles, while first half sales were of 102 electric, 930 plug-in hybrids and 7,050 hybrid units.

It’s worth noting that despite of the skyrocketing growth in the first half, customers preferences have leaned toward hybrid cars, as sales of full-electric vehicles were actually lower than a year before, from 119 units in 2017 to 102 in the current year.

Half of sales nationwide from January through June took place in the country’s capital and the neighboring state of Mexico, with 36% and 13.8% of total respectively. That’s because car owners in both entities are subject to strict environmental regulations that limit the use of their vehicles, however, hybrids and electric units are exempt from these barriers.
