NM inaugurates UTecS$2-million aerospace research center in Sonora

Mexico’s National Technological Institute (TecNM) recently inaugurated the first of three laboratories that will make up the Technological Research and Innovation Center for the Aerospace Industry Sector (CITISA) that will be located in Hermosillo, Sonora.
During the inauguration, the general director of the institution, Manuel Quintero, indicated that the CITISA will serve to complement the work that takes place in Ensenada, Baja California, where there are similar facilities, mainly in post and doctoral research projects. In addition, the official said that the opening of the center will be historical for Hermosillo since it will attract large investments for the state’s aerospace sector, where there are already important companies installed.
“We will be training human resources that the aerospace sector will demand in the coming years, through maintenance projects, repairs, and training of personnel,” Quintero said.
The governor of Sonora, Claudia Pavlovich, added that CITISA will help consolidate the state as a destination for research in this sector, which, she said, will transform the economic environment through the generation of well-paid jobs.
The first of the center’s three buildings, whose investment was of US$2.12 million, has an advanced manufacturing laboratory, a space destined for the development of detailed investigations in unmanned vehicles, avionics, mini and nano satellites, communication, remote sensing and a PLM room.
The second building will be dedicated to combustion, hangar, advanced designed, and prototyping, while the third laboratory will have aerospace structures, aerodynamics, flight dynamics, aerospace materials, modeling and process optimization.
