Engie Group, a French developer of energy infrastructure, announced that it will build a new photovoltaic park in the municipality of Caborca, state of Sonora, northern Mexico, with a capacity of 130.8 MW in which US$ 111 million will be invested.

The solar park will have an area of 266 hectares, where almost 400,000 photovoltaic panels will be installed in order to take advantage of the great potential for solar energy in that region.

This will be the eighth project developed by the company in Mexico and will supply electricity to Gerdau Corsa, a steel company with which Engie signed a 15-year contract to acquire the total energy generated by this park.

The construction of these facilities will begin at the end of this year aiming to being operations in the last quarter of 2019. During that period, more than 350 jobs will be generated, the company said in a statement.

Once this new solar park enters into operation, Engie will reach an output capacity in Mexico of 1,055 MW of 100% clean energy and for that purpose it will have allocated an investment of US$ 924 million in three years, period in which the company would’ve built six solar parks and two wind farms.

“This is a record growth for Engie in Mexico. In a really short period we will contribute more than 1 GW of clean energy to the service of the industry and the homes of the country,” said Fernando Tovar, CEO of Engie Mexico, quoted in the statement.
