Last month, global automakers built 320,071 cars and light trucks at their production facilities in Mexico, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), which is now in charge of compiling and publishing those figures, an assignment that, until last month, was in the hands of the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA).

The Inegi figures show that, in September of 2017, Mexico’s auto industry built 323,474 light vehicles, which differs from the 307,174 units posted last year by the AMIA.

By comparing the new production volumes with those in the first scenario, it results in a 1.05% decrease for September 2018, but it also shows a 4.2% increase if the AMIA figures are considered.

From now on, MexicoNow will only take into account the Inegi figures, although they may differ from those in our previous reports, which were based in data provided by the AMIA.

In the first nine months of 2018, a total 2,953,735 light vehicles rolled out of the auto plants established in Mexico. This figure represents a 0.9% increase compared to the 2,927,627 units built over the same nine-month period of 2017.

It’s worth noting that the marginal gain was achieved despite an idled Honda assembly plant in Celaya, Guanajuato, due to a flooding that took place in late June. The facility is slated to restart operations by mid-November.

Mexico exported 306,003 light vehicles in September, a gain of 6.8% compared to the 286,400 units from the same month of 2017, according to the Inegi figures. From January through September exports totaled 2,570,700 cars and light trucks, representing a 7.5% increase compared to the 2,390,530 units from the same period of 2017.

Among the automakers with the highest growth in production during September was Toyota, which recently expanded its Tijuana plant, with 45.2%, followed by KIA with 27%; Ford, 11.5%; General Motors, 6.3%; Mazda, 5.2% and Nissan with 4.4%.

Those that had steeper decreases in production in the ninth month of the year were Honda with 78%, Audi with 40.1%; Volkswagen, 15% and Fiat Chrysler with 1.2%.

Meanwhile, the auto companies with the highest growth in exports were KIA, with 45%, Toyota with 22%; Nissan and General Motors with 18.3% and 18.1% respectively; Ford, 10.8% and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles with 10.6%.
