The Germany-based lighting and electronic solutions manufacturer HELLA and the French technology automotive supplier Faurecia announced a partnership aimed to develop technologies for tomorrow's vehicle interiors.

For this purpose, HELLA will supply innovative products in the field of interior lighting to match Faurecia’s expertise as a complete system integrator for vehicle interiors.

“Automobile megatrends such as connectivity, individualization and autonomous driving will change the on-board experience. HELLA is therefore developing dynamic interior lighting solutions to support these trends while offering drivers safety and comfort at the same time,” said in a statement John Kuijpers, Head of Interior & Car Body Lighting at HELLA.

One of the first solutions the two companies have integrated into a vehicle exhibited from 2 to 14 October 2018 at Europe's most important motor show, the Paris Motor Show.

It features a concept car illustrates what these solutions can look like. Before the driver enters the vehicle, his profile and preferences are recorded and stored in the cloud, and then communicated to the cockpit. This allows for a personal greeting with light animations in the instrument panel, door trim, roof and seats.

During the journey, additional lighting features are used for communication. For example, light signals can be used to display incoming calls without disturbing other passengers. “Our goal is to use automotive lighting technology not only to enhance people's well-being, but also their safety,” says John Kuijpers.

HELLA and Faurecia are therefore working together to ensure that the division of tasks between driver and vehicle are carried out safely during the handover phases at the end of an autonomous driving session. The seats then bring the driver back into the appropriate driving position and a dynamic lighting scenario is used to increase concentration and attention.

It's not a crazy idea to say that some of the final products that might result from this joint work could be manufactured in Mexico in the near future, if not that some of the development could also take place in the country.

HELLA operates seven manufacturing facilities in Mexico. Four plants are located in the state of Guanajuato along with two design centers each one dedicated to the development of lighting and electronics components.

The company also owns plants in the municipalities of El Salto and Tlaquepaque, in the state of Jalisco, as well as in Cuautitlan Izcalli and Tlalnepantla, in the state of Mexico. Overall the company’s workforce in Mexico is about 7,000 employees.

On the other hand, four of the 14 manufacturing facilities that Faurecia operates in Mexico are dedicated to interior components. Those are located one each in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila and Villa de Reyes, San Luis Potosi, while the remaining two are in Huejotzingo and Cuautlancingo in the state of Puebla. The latter also features a design and development center.
