Volkswagen halts Jetta production in Puebla for two weeks

From October 8 until 21, the production line of the all-new Jetta will idle at the Volkswagen plant in Puebla, union leaders revealed to local media.
The halting has two purposes, they said, to adjust vehicle inventories in the main countries in which it is marketed, but also to carry out a tooling process so that starting January the Tiguan SUV will also be produced in the same line.
Such changes will be necessary to maintain a constant production avoiding the need to cut staff at the plant once the production of Golf and Beetle comes to an end next year, union representatives said.
The spokesmen affirmed that an additional stoppage is already scheduled for mid-November and that the workers affected in both cases will be paid 50% of their salary.
Audi plant also ends two-week stoppage
At the end of September another two-week stoppage also took place at the Audi assembly plant in San Jose Chiapa, Puebla.
Union leaders said that the halting, from September 24 to October 8, was meant to retool the assembly line in order to build the upcoming 2019 models of the Q5 SUV.
According to spokespersons, the strike will not affect production goals for this year which are of 170,000 units, 7.05% higher than the 158,000 SUVs produced last year.
It is worth noting that Audi recently announced that the Q5 would be the first vehicle in the catalog to debut its new hybrid powertrain, which will be available for the 2019 model year. However, union representatives declined to comment on whether the changes at the plant had anything to do with the introduction of this new variant.
