Despite all efforts between Mexico, the United States and Canada to sign a new trade agreement before the current Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto leaves office, U.S. Senate leader Mitch McConnell confirmed to Bloomberg News that the replacement of NAFTA will not be put to a vote this year.

“That'll be a next year issue,” said the Republican lawmaker who represents the state of Kentucky citing process standards as the main cause for postponement, but said the discussion will head the 2019 agenda.

“My trade advisers say you can’t possibly do it under the various steps that we have to go through. I had not heard that it might be possible to address it this year,” McConnell said.

The U.S., Mexico and Canada reached a deal late last month. The updated agreement, now called USMCA, needs to be approved by the legislatures of three countries in order to take effect.
