Ascent Aerospace opens US$ 22-million manufacturing plant in Mexicali

Ascent Aerospace, one of the largest tooling and automated assembly manufacturer for the aerospace industry, officially opened its first plant in Mexico.
Located at the new industrial park Calafia II in the municipality of Mexicali, Baja California, the 50,000 square feet facility houses a world-class welding and metal fabrication center.
According to a statement by the local government, the company opened 100 job positions for personnel skilled in welding and advanced manufacturing, but the figure is expected to double in the near future. An investment of US$ 22 million will be allocated in two phases, says the document.
The subsidiary of AIP Aerospace Tooling Group LLC manufactures molds for composite aerostructures, tools for the assembly of large parts and turnkey assembly lines for the most important aircraft programs in the world. Companies such as Airbus, Boeing, UTC, and GKN are among its customers.
The aerospace group is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, and has more than 900 employees around the world. Ascent has a total manufacturing area of 780,000 square feet, plus the new Mexicali plant, and more than 1.5 million hours of annual tool manufacturing capacity.
Ascent Aerospace was supported by Grupo Prodensa in the strategic decision of its new location in Mexico. Grupo Prodensa, a consulting services company for national and foreign manufacturing companies, coordinated with the municipal, state and GRUMESA developers, and recommended Mexicali for its industry-leading strengths for aerospace and advanced manufacturing.
With the arrival of Ascent Aerospace, Baja California now has 94 aerospace companies that together employ more than 35,000 people.
The ceremony was attended by the company’s CEO Michael Mahfet, COO Paul Walsh, Ascent Aerospace Mexico Plant Manager, Guillermo Rivera Méndez and the Governor of Baja California, Francisco Vega de Lamadrid, as well as other local officials.
