Mexico in 57th place, worldwide, in port infrastructure

The Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) reported that in the Global Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum, Mexico moved upwards significantly, as it advanced 18 positions in port infrastructure, going from place 75th in 2012 to 57th in 2018.

This is due to the fact that a fair amount of money was invested within the sector. While 80% of the investments came from private resources, the objective was to double the operational capacity of Mexican ports from 260 million tons in 2012, to 530 million tons by the end of 2018.

In a statement the SCT said that, in order to achieve operational capacity growth, five new ports are being built in the Gulf of Mexico. Those in Matamoros, Tuxpan and Seybaplaya have already been completed, while the one in Ciudad del Carmen and the New Port of Veracruz are still being worked on.

"These port projects boost national production and trade, generating employment and social development and, thus, improving the quality of life of Mexicans," the SCT said.
