Marcopolo, Navistar jointly build buses for export markets

Polomex, the Mexican subsidiary of Brazilian bus manufacturer Marcopolo, established an alliance with Navistar International to build buses for foreign markets. The first units that resulted from this joint work will be exported to Panama, where they already have an order.

According to Marcopolo, this alliance represents the internationalization of its Mexican subsidiary, which since its beginning of operations in 2015, dedicates all of its production to the local market. In the same way, for a year and a half, Polomex has provided bus bodies to Navistar for units that the latter only destines to the domestic market.

Navistar International builds commercial vehicles at a massive plant located in Escobedo, Nuevo Leon, while Polomex operates at a production facility jointly developed with Mercedes Benz Buses, which is located in the nearby municipality of Garcia, also in Nuevo Leon.

“The synergies between Navistar International and Marcopolo-Polomex for the export market are opening business opportunities, given the technical specifications and geographical position that Mexico offers,” said Paulo Andrade, Marcopolo's general director in Mexico, in a press release. Both companies also contemplate taking their production to countries in Asia and the Middle East.

“The International brand has exported from its plant in Escobedo more than 45,100 units since 2011, and with Marcopolo we see an opportunity to increase these figures,” said Cesar Longo, bus sales director of Navistar International.

The panoramic buses for exports feature the International 4700 FE chassis developed in the Navistar plant, which incorporate the Marcopolo body model MP60 ES with 48 seats and air conditioning.
