Last October, global automakers established in Mexico manufactured 363,474 cars and light trucks, according to preliminary data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). Such figure represents a decline of 4.8% compared to the 381,986 vehicles built in the same month of 2017.

It is noteworthy that this time it was the Japanese automaker Mazda who, for unknown reasons, did not provide either its production or exports figures for the month of October to the Inegi.

If Mazda production figure from October last year, of 13,572 vehicles, is taken as a reference to calculate the total production of the Mexican industry during last month, it results in a total of 377,046 units. However, that figure is still 1.3% lower than that of last year.

Total production from January through October totaled 3,317,209 vehicles as reported by the Inegi, which represents a 0.1% decline compared to the 3,319,670 units built over the same 10-month period of 2017. Again, if the 13,572 units from Mazda are taken into account it results in a year-to-date total production of 3,330,781 vehicles, a 0.3% increase.

Not bad considering that the Honda plant in Guanajuato remained idled in October due to the flood it experienced back in late June. That facility would’ve built at least 10,000 additional vehicles if it was operational.

Among the manufacturers that saw declines in their production during October was German premium automaker Audi with -22.3%, FCA with -6.8%, Honda with -78% and GM with -5.4%. Meanwhile, those that boosted their output were Ford with 45%, KIA with 34.5%, Toyota with 22.8% and Nissan with 1.7%.

Regarding of exports, automakers shipped 305,808 vehicles in October, which represented a marginal increase of 0.8% compared to 303,514 units from same month of 2017. Total exports in the first ten months of 2018 were of 2,876,508 vehicles, a 6.8% rise compared to 2,694,518 from the same period of 2017.

Again, Mazda figures from last October are missing. If the 9,551 vehicles that the Japanese automaker exported in the same month of 2017 are taken as reference to calculate total exports, it results in a 3.9% increase for last month and a 7.1% rise in from January through October.
