The agri-food sector of Mexico is currently a profitable and safe investment destination and an important area of opportunity for domestic and foreign producers, thanks to the high standards of quality, health and safety achieved through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA), said Francisco Gurría Treviño, general director of livestock.

During a Business Forum organized by the Embassy of Denmark in Mexico, Guerría Treviño explained that Mexico currently does agri-food exports to the world for more than US$32 billion and the sector is in a dynamic of constant growth, both in agriculture as in livestock and fishing––activities where producers become increasingly more competitive with consumers who are also more demanding.

Regarding livestock, Gurría Treviño pointed out that in all livestock subsectors a constant and important growth is reflected, which is absolutely verifiable through reliable statistics prepared from the information provided by producers themselves.

Furthermore, Heriberto Hernández, president of the Country Pork Organization (OPORPA), endorsed the commitment of pork producers in the country to raise the quality standards of their products every day, in addition to maintaining that high competitiveness and quality that has been reached in recent years.

The national inventory, showed Hernández, is currently of 17.7 million heads of pigs, which grew by more than 8% in the last six years, as well as the production of 1.2 million tons of meat, which is a growth of 16% for the same period, while the per capita consumption of Mexicans is 19.5 kilos per year.
