Mexican tomato generates almost US$5 billion in the U.S.

Tomato exports from Mexico to the United States represent a business of US$4.8 billion per year and are growing more and more, according to a study by the University of Arizona.

The report indicates that during 2016, Mexico exported nearly 1.55 billion tons of tomato, which generated resources of almost US$1,900 for the country. While the production chain integrated fresh tomatoes to the processed food market, which detonated a value of US$4.8 billion.

According to the study, Mexican tomatoes generate nearly 33,000 jobs in the U.S., spill US$2.9 billion, and leave US$1.4 billion in compensation to employees and more than US$353 million in profits to businessmen in the industry. In terms of taxes, the tomato chain leaves US$400 million in federal taxes and US$350 million in local taxes.

It’s not a secret that Mexico figures as the first or second tomato exporter, fighting for leadership with the Netherlands. In 2016, the European country exported US$2 billion, according to World of Exports. In the same year, Mexico exported US$1.9 billion.

However, by 2017, Mexico exported US$2.7 billion, according to Sagarpa figures, bringing the tomato to the same level as avocado and beer, stars of the country's agrifood exports.
