Chihuahua develops industrial corridor to attract manufacturers of electric vehicles

Authorities of the state of Chihuahua visited the headquarters of the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry in Mexico City to publicize the development of an industrial corridor with which they seek to attract companies interested in producing electric cars in that state, which borders Texas and New Mexico.

For this project, said the delegation headed by Governor Javier Corral, there is a large area near Ciudad Juarez with train tracks, utilities and, due to its location in a free zone, it features certain tax exemptions.

According to its promoters, another of the attractions to offer is that the state already has a solid supply network: Chihuahua is the second producer of auto parts nationwide, producing 14.4% of the total; while it is the leader in direct employment in the automotive sector with 155,000 workers who already manufacture parts for electric vehicles such as Tesla.

The plant would also be located near laboratories and research and development centers established in both Chihuahua and New Mexico.

Officials in Chihuahua said the project has already generated interest from companies based in China, Japan and the United Kingdom, although there are still no formal negotiations.
