General Motors CEO Mary Barra stood firm on plans to idle five plants in North America as she met Wednesday with U.S. senators and several of Michigan's newly elected officials.

Speaking with reporters after the closed-door meeting, Barra said it would be “very costly” to shift production of the Chevrolet Blazer from Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila to a U.S. plant, Reuters reported.

She also said GM plans to launch production of a number of new products in the United States, including two new Cadillac vehicles that will be built in Michigan next year.

Both Barra and the lawmakers agreed that one way to allocate new products on the idled plants would be to expedite negotiations with the United Auto Workers union, so GM can make decisions quicker, said The Detroit News.
