Iberdrola first solar park in Mexico nearly completed; two more on the way

Representatives of the Spanish electricity company Iberdrola were in Hermosillo, Sonora, to announce that a photovoltaic park is about to become operational in that municipality, after a US$ 135 million investment, El Financiero reported.

“The annual generation is 175.2 GWh equivalent to supplying more than 100,000 homes,” said Alfonso Campos, Iberdrola's director of renewables, adding that the complex will start operations before the end of the year.

The park has a total installed capacity of 100 MW generated through 389,580 solar panels spread over an area of 305 hectares. It will be the first photovoltaic plant of the Spanish firm to start operations in Mexico.

The official explained that this plant will reduce around 110,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year, which is equivalent to removing 30,000 vehicles from circulation for 12 months. He also indicated that the project began three years ago, its construction took 20 months and ended in March of last year.

Aside from the Hermosillo facility, Iberdrola has two more renewable energy projects under construction in Mexico, which are wind farms: one in Puebla with 220 MW and the other in Guanajuato with 105 MW.

The conference took place a day after Iberdrola CEO Ignacio Sanchez Galan announced to media in Spain that during 2019 the company will invest US$ 454 million to build two more photovoltaic in Mexico, which together add a capacity of 390 MW when they come into operation in 2020.

One of the projects, called Cuyoaco, will have a 200 MW output capacity and will be built in the municipalities of Cuyoaco and Ocotepec, in Puebla. According to state authorities, the plant will require an investment of US$ 235 million, which will generate 1,300 temporary jobs.

The second project, called Apaxco, will be located in the municipalities of Hueypxtla and Tequixquiac, in the State of Mexico. The 190 MW facility will require the remaining US$ 219 million investment. Iberdrola plans to start both works in the first half of next year.
