Ford tests small pickup prototype likely to be built in Cuautitlan

Cleverly disguised as a van, Ford’s new small pickup truck was recently spotted during test drives at the company’s campus in Michigan. The vehicle, which will slot under the midsize Ranger, will be manufactured at the Cuautitlan assembly plant, according to reports that first surfaced last Summer.

The unibody vehicle would be based on the new scalable platform currently used by the Ford Focus, meaning that it will have a transversely-mounted powertrain powered by either naturally-aspirated or turbo-charged four-cylinder engines. All-wheel-drive is also likely to be available.

Some reports even highlighted how similar, if not identical, are some of the features, such as the mirrors, to those on the Focus.

Although the prototype is a two-door single cab pickup, production models are expected to be launched also as four-door version and, since the Cuautitlan facility is also slated to build an electric vehicle, some analysts say a hybrid variant of the truck is possible.

The pickup is likely to be introduced in the 2021 calendar year as a 2022 model under the Courier nameplate, a name Ford already filed in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) back in July 2016.
